Orienteering Guide

This guide is designed for practical execution: read map, plan micro-routes, reduce mistakes, and finish clean.

1. Understand The Goal

Start at S, punch each control in order, then finish at F. Missing order leads to DQ or invalid result.

2. Align Map And North

Before moving fast, align terrain with map north. A correct first bearing reduces large route errors.

3. Read Terrain Features

Use vegetation density, open land, paths, marsh, and contours to decide speed-safe routes rather than shortest line only.

4. Execute Control Approach

Break each leg into attack point, final approach, and exit direction. Confirm code mentally before leaving.

5. Prevent Time Loss

Most time loss comes from hesitation and wrong relocation. Keep a relocation plan: last known feature + compass reset.

6. Finish Flow Best Practice

After final control, hold direction and approach finish cleanly. Do not stop early before crossing finish trigger zone.
